What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small, screw-shaped rod of titanium. This implant is surgically placed into the gum and jaw tissue, where it permanently bonds with your bone structure. Essentially, it works as an artificial “root.”

Once this “root” has been placed and has healed, it can be used to support a variety of implant-supported restorations. For example, one tooth can be replaced with a single implant and a dental crown, or several implants can be used to support a dental bridge or a set of implant-supported dentures.

Bone grafting

In some cases, you may need a bone graft to ensure your jaw is prepared to receive a dental implant. For example, if it has been an extended length of time since you lost a tooth or had one removed, the underlying bone structure may have started to deteriorate, also known as bone resorption. We can encourage the weakened bone to regrow by placing some grafted bone tissue in the socket. This ensures your jaw is strong and ready for dental implant placement.

The Implant Placement Process

The first step of the implant procedure is the surgical placement of your implants. Your doctor will use advanced CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) imaging to create a custom surgical plan for your appointment. Your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, your doctor will create a small opening in your gum and jaw tissue, and place the implant precisely based on your surgical plan. After this, the implant site will be cleaned and sutured. This process will be repeated if you’re receiving multiple implants.

Healing & Recovering After Implant Surgery

It takes about 1-2 weeks to heal from your implant surgery. We will provide you with instructions to follow as you rest and recover.

However, it will take 3-6 months for the implant to heal and bond with your jaw bone permanently. You will come into our office for several follow ups to check on your progress.

The Implant Restoration Process

During your check-ups after implant surgery, your doctor will begin scanning your mouth to begin crafting your dental implant restoration, such as a dental crown.

Once your mouth has fully healed, your doctor will create your restoration and fit it to the implant or implants, and make any necessary adjustments. Once the fit is perfect, your restoration will be bonded into place permanently, completing the procedure.
